This project focuses on the adaptive reuse of an abandoned industrial building in Turin, Italy, transforming its top floor into a contemporary residential housing complex for young professionals and students. The existing structure has a 530 square meter footprint, offering generous spatial potential for flexible living solutions.
The north-east façade of the building overlooks Giardino Luigia Virgilio and the Dora Riparia River, providing strong visual connections to the surrounding landscape. Access to the building is exclusively from Via Fiochetto, maintaining the industrial character of the original structure while introducing a new residential identity.

The project brief required the design of 10 studio apartments and 4 one-bedroom apartments, supported by shared co-working areas and common spaces. Being located on the top floor, the project takes advantage of the flat roof, which is transformed into a shared green roof with individual access from each apartment, enhancing the quality of urban living.
All 14 residential units feature efficiently planned built-in kitchen and bathroom modules, ensuring spatial consistency and construction efficiency throughout the project. The layouts are designed to maximize usable area while maintaining comfort and functionality.

The strategic placement of mobile furniture elements allows each apartment to adapt to different living scenarios, supporting flexibility for students and young professionals. This approach enables the interiors to evolve with the changing needs of residents, reinforcing the concept of adaptable urban housing.
Common Spaces
The common areas are designed around the central theme of Playfulness, as defined in the project brief. This concept is expressed through the interaction of natural daylight, light and shadow, and bold material choices that encourage social interaction and creativity.
The project’s color palette is based on the contrast between stimulating and calming tones, including electric blue, pastel pink, bright red, and light olive green. These colors are carefully balanced to create energetic yet comfortable shared environments.
Playful surface treatments using ALPI Sottsass veneers are applied consistently across the common spaces, establishing a strong visual identity that also extends into the themed studio apartment.

Default Units
The default apartment units are designed with a neutral and calming color palette, prioritizing versatility and long-term usability. Material choices are intentionally understated to appeal to a wide range of residents and lifestyles.
An open-plan layout enhances visual continuity within each apartment and contributes to a sense of spaciousness. This effect is further amplified by the 4.5-meter-high ceilings, which allow natural light to penetrate deep into the interiors and reinforce the loft-like character of the former industrial building.

Playful Studio Apartment
One studio apartment is designed as a concept unit that fully embraces the Playfulness theme, directly reflecting the identity of the common spaces. Each functional zone of this playful studio apartment within the apartment features its own color composition derived from the main palette, combining stimulating and soothing hues with the expressive ALPI Gray Sottsass veneer.

The design integrates multi-functional built-in furniture, offering adaptable living solutions within a compact footprint. Mobile furniture elements and bold color applications further enhance the playful and experimental atmosphere of the space.

The interior is inspired by iconic design pieces, including the Tahiti Lamp by Ettore Sottsass, which serves as the primary conceptual reference. Additional furniture and lighting selections such as the Roly Poly Chair by Faye Toogood, Modulation Floor Lamp by Axel Chay, and Arch Pendant Light by Oblure reinforce the apartment’s playful, design-driven identity.
